The Doctor of Spinalonga: based on real events

Giorgos Pratsinis

"Walking down the street of Spinalonga, stop and hold your breath. From some hut around you, you will hear the echo of a mother's or sister's lament or a man's sigh. Let two tears from your eyes and you will see the sparkle of millions of tears that have watered this road." This is what Epaminondas Remoundakis, the last healed leper of the island's infirmary, commands visitors to Spinalonga, whose personal diary and the unknown events of his life in the inferno of the living dead condemned by fate were the occasion for the writing of this book. The director of the hospital, Doctor George Papadakis, is for the inmates their man. It is precisely this humanity that will be the cause of a true friendship between him and Erich, a German officer, during the difficult years of World War II and the Occupation. Unraveling the tangle of their lives, the two men will discover people and events that unite them, talk about their past, their present, their future and the women who marked their lives. Erich's transfer to another front in the war will cause them to lose track of each other for several years. But fate has big surprises in store for them...
