Historical Archives
In 2001, the administration of the American Farm School Archives and Historical Collection was transferred to the Dimitris and Aliki Perrotis Library. These archives preserve invaluable records concerning the school’s founding and history, including correspondence, reports, photographs, artifacts, and documentation related to the history of Thessaloniki. Prior to this transition, Brenda Marder, Niki Meyer, Randy Warner, and Charlotte Draper undertook significant efforts to organize the materials. In 2007, Nancy, a Professor Emerita and former Curator and University Archivist at Kent State University, began a volunteer project to process the collection, which included the following tasks:
— Appraising and selecting existing unsorted records;
— Organizing records into logical groups within archival boxes and folders;
— Preserving documents, photographs, and artifacts (including physical preservation, such as encapsulation, and digital preservation via scanning and imaging);
— Coding each record into a web document; and
— Creating an online inventory in HTML.
In 2007, the American Farm School was invited to join Europeana, the European digital library project led in Greece by a team from the Central Public Library of Veria. The integration of the American Farm School’s archival collections into Europeana served as a key catalyst for the digitization of its primary photographic archives.
To accomplish this, while simultaneously processing existing unsorted records, 1,000 core photographs were selected from three major AFS collections for the European Digital Library Project. These collections include miscellaneous AFS photos, the postcard collection, and various documents and scanned artifacts from the Quaker Girl’s School.
DSpace was chosen as the platform for participating institutions to upload archival material to EUROPEANA. While configuration, parameterization, and installation were outsourced, a staff training seminar held in July 2009 enabled us to manually input metadata for each digital object using the Dublin Core schema.
In 2025, we transitioned from DSpace to Omeka Classic, an open-source, flexible web-publishing platform for archival metadata. This migration enables us to create digital collections and exhibitions while offering patrons a more intuitive and dynamic navigation experience. Following the acquisition of a private collection that same year, we enhanced our metadata schema by integrating the International Council on Archives’ ISAD(G), ISAAR(CPF), and ISDIAH standards into Dublin Core. This unique integration was successfully completed in 2026, marking its first implementation within an Omeka environment in Greece and demonstrating the platform’s exceptional versatility.

Interlibrary Loan
Search for Print Books in other Libraries in Thessaloniki!
[the platform is in Greek]

The ‘Dimitris and Aliki Perrotis’ Library provides you the chance to seek and borrow a physical book from another Library, by declaring its partnership with the Interlibrary Loan Network “Thess-βιβλίο”: the initial Interlibrary Loan Network in Greece that encompasses municipal, academic, and private libraries. The Libraries involved in this network include the Municipal Libraries of Thessaloniki, Kalamaria, Thermi, Pavlos Melas, and the Library and Information Centre of the University of Macedonia; the Municipal Library of Ampelokipoi-Menemeni is also interested in joining.
The procedure to borrow a book from one of the Libraries mentioned above is simple:
— Visit our Library with your Library Card and ask at the Front Desk for the book you need.
— If it’s not available in our library, we look it up via the Network and let you know if it can be accessed.
— If the book is found in a different library and is part of their collection for lending to external patrons, we start the hold process for that title, or – if you reside close to that library – we notify you so you can personally collect the book you requested.
— The period for interlibrary loans is firmly set at 14 days.
